This is the day that the Lord has made, let us rejoice and be glad in it.

Be Still My Steampunk Heart

While I was converting my steampunk confetti file to MTC, I thought I'd do a little gear inspired Valentine Card.
I cut the gears from a bronze metallic paper and attached the tags and clock hands with metal fasteners. I inked a few edges to represent mechanical dust and grime.
The file has several differents parts, so maybe even if steampunk isn't your style you can find something useful! :)

Enjoy the Whimsey!

Texture Tuesday - Story

I'm thinking any photo could be used for this prompt - as every picture tells a story - right??
Yesterday was a beautiful sunshiny day - perfect for getting some great photos. I, of course, got involved with other projects and didn't get around to snapping anything until late in the day so my originals weren't as good as they could have been - but that's another story :)

My photo actually contains several stories. The sewing supplies belonged to my Grandma who passed away last year. Her sewing basket and its contents were passed down to me. Grandma loved color so I chose some colorful thread spools to highlight. I love the timeworn metal scissors and thimble so I grabbed them out of the basket too.

Grandma spent many hours making and giving. Many laps and babies have been warmed by the little quilts she put together with her "sewing circle" church group. The diamond shape is a pattern piece for a "nosegay" quilt; in her handwriting she noted "6 piece pattern" "cut 6 pieces this one."

Being the oldest grandchild I was the recipient of the first of 10 "made with love from Grandma" quilts. My quilt, a double wedding ring design, is in the background of the photo. My mom passed along pieces of outgrown clothing and scraps from home sewn garments for Grandma to include in the quilt. I can pick out fabric from our special patriotic 1976 outfits, my favorite "float" dress, flannels from pj's, plaids from Dad's shirt, prints from baby sisters wardrobe, etc.

With a little PSE magic and Kim's Just Stitched texture and tutorials my late-in-the-day snapshot is transformed into this memory worthy Story Photo. Thanks Kim!

This is the sewing box of which I am now keeper. I think I will weed out a few items and use it to store some the the birthday cards, photos and other memory joggers and keepsakes that I've kept through the years.

Texture Tuesday - Open

It's been a while since I participated in a Texture Tuesday challenge

I looked through my photos for something to convey "open"
and was coming up empty.

Then I found the photos I'd taken of our old barn back in Indiana.

I didn't really think the door could look any more "rustic," but Kim's textures (BurntEdges, and 123) really worked some magic!

Be sure to stop by Kim's to see the great photo transformations being linked up today!!

500 Peacocks

Was busy with my Zing this weekend cutting some confetti.
for a Super Mario Bros party - cute :)

These 500 peacocks will be on their way to a wedding rendezvous tomorrow :)

Here's my "homework" from the past week's Strathmore Art Workshop
Watercolor doodles to serve as backgrounds for other art.
I think the best part is just taking the time to play around and experiment with the paint.

(To reinforce the point that I'm not buying any new supplies for this workshop - I used some old leftover watercolors from when the girls were little, watercolor crayons I had picked up on clearance at some point, some almost worn out Crayola markers and my "large art canvas" is actually a piece of freezer paper!)

Happy Monday!!

Chevron Hearts

I ♥ Hearts!
At one point I started to collect heart shaped items, but decided they were too easy to come by and would soon overtake me and my home.

I had a great time collecting hearts on Etsy to fill this treasury though! And I was able to sneak a lot of my favorite color in it too! :)

In the spirit of the season I designed this little Chevron Heart to share.

I have also spent some time experimenting with my new Zing. I cut these hearts from fabric!
Oh, the possibilities!!

Look for someone to share your heart with today!!

Have a wonder-filled day!!

Doodles, Anyone?

If anyone would like a little boost in their creativity let me recommend a free Strathmore Artist Workshop.

I found out about the workshops last year after they were completed, but the videos were still available. I watched a couple videos but didn't really get out my art supplies and participate.

The current workshop "Doodles Unleashed" sounded pretty harmless - anyone can doodle, right? So I decided to give it a try. Although a supply list is supplied, participants are also encouraged to use what they already own. (I'm a make-do artist and not planning on buying a thing - there are no grades handed out, for goodness sake!)
This is my doodle assignment from last week - not a masterpiece by a long shot, but it was fun to follow the creative process of the "real" artist, Traci Bautista. I've also picked up a few new ideas to use the supplies I have (layers!!)

Another fun aspect of the workshop is interacting with fellow classmate and seeing their interpretations of the techniques presented. So. Much. Fun!

It's not too late!  Head on over and sign up! It would be fun to have you join us!!

Little Somethings

One of my goals this year is to share a few "little somethings" with you throughout the year. Any little thing that captures my attention and I think you may enjoy too.

I came across this lovely little 2012 Calender designed by a very talented young artist and her mom.
Visit their blog to get your free pdf copy too!
I printed out the calender, cut and aged the pages then added the keyring clip and raggedy ribbons. Always need a little calender/notepad by my computer and this is perfect.

And, Oh! the beautiful art at their Etsy store!! Love the little bird prints! Be sure to check them out!!

Starting 2012 with a Zing!

Happy New Year!
Hope 2012 has started off on the right foot for you.

We had a wonderful Christmas break! Spent precious time visiting and celebrating with family. Our travels were safe and uneventful. And we even got a reminder of what a winter snow is like (honestly, I didn't need the reminder, but it was pretty!)

I received a new toy for Christmas! After cutting and crafting with my Craft Robo for 5 years (and being very good about not lusting after all the upgraded cutters that have come along during those years), Hubby gifted me with a KNK Zing! Not only can I cut larger (up to 14" wide!), but I can cut heavier, denser papers and even fabric!!
So . . .
I am now learning how to operate this nifty new cutter along with learning to design with new software (MakeTheCut). Making progress - but still lots to learn!!

Haven't gotten too adventurous yet with this new machine, although I did try cutting chipboard - and as they say "cut like butter"!!

I must admit to being a little intimidated at first (uh, still) with the variety of cut settings (blade depth, force, offset), but I'm getting the hang of it and with each cut I get a better understanding of how everything works together.

If anyone is considering purchasing this cutter and has questions let me know - I will do some experimenting and report back.  :)

All that being said, for file sharing I'll be offering different file type downloads. Please, if these don't work for you let me know, 'cause the only one I have tested is MTC. MTC software allows me to export in svg, ai/eps, and pdf; so hopefully one of these will work for you without too much trouble.

So here it is my first share from my Zing! This is sized for a scrapbook page - but could easily be cut larger!
Happy 2012!!

Speaking of a New Year - my goal is to update my blog a bit more often than I have been recently - but you know how resolutions go . . .
:) See ya soon!
